Check Out our Housing Summit!

Jeff Levine talks about the history of U.S. housing policy, the use of zoning to enforce racial segregation, and the impact of suburban zoning in Greater Portland on liming the supply of multi-family housing and increasing housing costs.

Greater Portland needs 24,000 new housing units by 2030 just to meet demand. Studies have shown that creating more supply is critical for reducing the cost of housing.

The housing will have the least environmental impact if we build it near public transportation and where people work.

Developers will meet demand by building housing in the wrong places — on productive woodlands and farmland located far from where people work and shop — creating more traffic and more auto emissions that contribute to the climate crisis.
